The New Mexico Health Equity Working Group (NMHEWG) formed in December, 2007 in response to the state’s unacceptable health disparities and to the opportunities presented by the imminent release of the PBS documentary series Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?
The NMHEWG is comprised of a wide variety of over 100 individuals, community-based organizations, academic partners, and agencies that are committed to improving health equity in the state.

- Reframing the predominant view of health to include and address the social determinants (social, economic and political factors) of health;
- Connecting individuals, communities, and organizations to work together towards health equity and;
- Advocating for ethical policies that eliminate or mitigate disparities and inequalities that affect health.
